Review: Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales in The Ginger Snapped, Leicester Square Theatre
“Showbiz glamour oozes from her constantly”
RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 winner, Jinkx Monsoon, returns to the London stage with her frequent showbiz partner and collaborator, Major Scales, in a comedy cabaret based around the star’s latest album, The Ginger Snapped.
Monsoon is no stranger to the UK crowd. She’s showcased her talents in various tours and shows across the country as well as her collaboration with The Soho Theatre previously for her show ‘Jinkx Sings Everything’ which was praised highly.
Monsoon is a theatre queen at heart and even though the songs from the album are more ‘pop’ than theatrical, showbiz glamour oozes from her constantly. Set up as an unintended therapy session, Scales starts a conversation with Monsoon about why she acts the way she does – she experiences mood swings, swears, complains, self-medicates and takes a lot of it out on Scales and the audience – though Monsoon is so charming, her audience are transfixed and she can get away with anything.
Monsoon and Scales have toured the world for years with their extremely successful show ‘The Vaudevillians’ and it remains in the memories of cabaret fans strongly – so strongly in fact that The Ginger Snapped feels paler in comparison. It may be due to the fact that this show features mainly original music or it’s not as varied or has as much substance as the previous show. However, The Ginger Snapped still is an enjoyable hour – perhaps in a more intimate cabaret space, it would make a bigger impact.
The scenes between Scales and Monsoon are well crafted, the show is simply directed and highlights such as original song ‘Cartoons and Vodka’ show how much of an intelligent artist Monsoon is. She doesn’t need the big, flashy presentations that some of her peers may have – you come to see/hear her and she delivers.
The Ginger Snapped is a pleasant evening of cabaret and highlights an album which you can buy HERE. Jinkx will be working in collaboration with Soho Theatre again in the following months with ‘Peaches Christ’s Drag Becomes Her’. We haven’t seen the end of Monsoon season yet! Nor would we want to.
