What’s better than basking in the warm Summer glow with a good drink in hand and even better company in tow?

Life is easier in Covent Garden in the Summertime, with long sunlit hours that work their magic on the tired and bothered. After work drinks become languid affairs and no longer an excuse for a conspiratorial pint, the furtive slug of gin. People smile with good grace despite bustling corners blooming in the sun – it is positively continental. Here are some of our favourite places for a Covent Garden sundowner.

Somerset House has us spoilt for choice – nothing signals 6pm happiness like sharing a bottle of Viognier and some delightful nibbles (the ‘things on toast’ are delicious) on the Waterloo Bridge terrace at Pennethornes. A perfect spot for people-watching as you admire London whizzing by from your own small oasis of calm. Around the corner San Miguel, purveyors of sun-laden adventures, are hosting the Somerset House Terrace all Summer from noon till late every day (6pm on Sundays). Who needs to be in Spain when you can bring Spain to your very own doorstep? Expect some Iberian tapas along with beers to keep you going well into the night.

The newly refurbished Royal Opera House has opened up its terrace bar
to the public during the evening for the first time, which means that you can now access the Level Five terrace, with sweeping views over the Piazza, without being a ticket holder (although everyone should experience the world- class opera and ballet on offer at least once). The terrace is a sophisticated place to relax with a glass of something, whether for a low-key meeting or a long overdue catch up with friends. With retractable windows, the space can be covered in case of that most typical of English Summer rain, so you can enjoy the chicest views in Covent Garden whatever the weather.

The Radio Rooftop bar at the ME London Hotel on the Strand commands tantalising views and is the place to see and be seen. For a luxurious treat, whizz up in the dark lifts and bag a table overlooking the majestic Thames. Watch the sun go down as you sip on a Radio Punch, a Ruby Spark cocktail or a classic glass of chilled rosé all of which complement the colour of the blazing sky. If you are making a party of it with a group of friends, make sure you book in advance and leave room for the bellota and manchego croquettes and crispy calamari sharing plates.
